Adventure Details:
Hello from Cambridge (Ontario)!
After a long, tiresome first flight surrounded by crying infants, I made it to the beautiful land of Onterrible - oops, I mean, Ontario - on Wednesday night. Ok, maybe the flight wasn't that long and tiresome. It certainly felt longer than the expected 1h 45 flight time.
Upon arrival at the architectural eyesore that is Waterloo-Kitchener airport, I was reunited with Arkin and Dak (aka: my favourite chaos coordinators). The remainder of the night was filled with Arkin's famous tacos, a little lot a bit of drinks, laughter, lovable-bullying, and catching up on everyone's life updates from the previous summer work term. I think there may have been a game or two of ping pong, but we certainly did not follow the proper ping pong rules...
Thursday was a studio day for the other two, so I accompanied them to our 'home away from home,' also known as the School of Architecture. I started by sitting in on their morning lecture, but upon the realization that I was not obligated to stay as it was not my class, I left and went for a walk around the building. It's quite a beautiful building, especially when you're not impacted by the stresses and pressures of academia. I walked slowly through the naturally-daylight hallways, gazed not-so-lovingly at the scenic views of the not-so-grand Grand River (subjective opinion of course), admired the freshly painted steel columns, ran my fingertips along the cold masonry walls, and observed the contrast of the excited first year students set up their assigned studio desks and the less-excited upper year students scramble to claim their desks before their classmates. Watching the day unfold before me as an inside-outsider, or maybe an outside-insider(?), unaffected by the first-week stresses was weird to say the least.
I had dinner at The Mule with Priya (aka: one of my favourite muses/mom-energy friends) where we shared a pitcher of margarita and devoured delicious tacos while catching up on life. Have you ever had those moments with your best friends where you think, 'If nothing else, this is why we became friends,' else random moments just filled by laughter and love for one another? Well, this was certainly one of those moments. Picture this: two twenty-something year old girls looking over a menu in a quiet, cozy restaurant off of a pedestrian street in a small Ontario city. I look up from the menu and ask, "Thoughts on sharing a pitcher of margarita?" Priya responds, "I was just about to ask you what flavour of margarita we should get to share." It's the little things in life, right?
Ending the trip with a wholesome bonding moment with a few of the first year architecture students in studio with Arkin and Dak before retreating back to Dak's house for our last night together before we're reunited again in our 4A Rome term next year...
Although it was a quick trip to an odd destination (because who else, other than a super nerd like myself, would travel to their UNIVERSITY willingly??), I don't regret going west before going even further east.
